‘I Should Have Known Better’

‘UK Equalities Chief Who Popularised The Term ‘Islamophobia’ Admits:
‘I Thought Muslims Would Blend into Britain… I Should Have Known Better’

“For a long time, I too thought that Europe’s Muslims would become like previous waves of migrants, gradually abandoning their ancestral ways, wearing their religious and cultural baggage lightly, and gradually blending into Britain’s diverse identity landscape. I should have known better.”

“Some of my journalist friends imagine that, with time, the Muslims will grow out of it. They won’t.”

SayNO, ‘I Should Have Known Better’, 800x800“The former head of Britain’s ‘Equalities and Human Rights Commission’ (EHRC), Trevor Phillips, has admitted he “got almost everything wrong” on Muslim immigration in a damning new report on integration, segregation, and how the followers of Islam are creating “nations within nations” in the West.

“Phillips, a former elected member of the ‘Labour Party’ who served as the Chairman of the EHRC from 2003-2012, will present “What British Muslims Really Think” on Channel 4 on Wednesday. An ICM poll released to the ‘Times’ ahead of the broadcast reveals:

–One in five Muslims in Britain never enter a non-Muslim house;
–39% of Muslims, male and female, say a woman should always obey her husband;
–31% of British Muslims support the right of a man to have more than one wife;
–52% of Muslims did not believe that homosexuality should be legal;
–23% of Muslims support the introduction of Sharia law rather than the laws laid down by parliament.

“Writing in the Times on the issue, Phillips admits:

“Liberal opinion in Britain has, for more than two decades, maintained that most Muslims are just like everyone else… Britain desperately wants to think of its Muslims as versions of the ‘Great British Bake Off’ winner Nadiya Hussain, or the cheeky-chappie athlete Mo Farah. But thanks to the most detailed and comprehensive survey of British Muslim opinion yet conducted, we now know that just isn’t how it is.”

“Phillips commissioned “the Runnymede report” into Britain and ‘Islamophobia’ in 1997 which, according to both Phillips himself and academics across the country, popularised the phrase which has now become synonymous with any criticism – legitimate or not – of Islam or Muslims.

“Durham University’s ‘Anthropology Journal’ noted in 2007:

“It has been a decade since the ‘Commission on British Muslims and ‘Islamophobia’ was established, a Commission that through its 1997 report, “Islamophobia: a challenge for us all” (“the Runnymede report”) not only raised an awareness of the growing reality of anti-Muslim and anti-Islamic hostility in Britain, but also marked the onset of what might be described as ‘the first decade of ‘Islamophobia’. In doing so, the Runnymede report propelled the word ‘Islamophobia’ into the everyday common parlance and discourses of both the public and political spaces.”

“Phillips says his new data shows “a chasm” opening between Muslims and non-Muslims on fundamental issues such as marriage, relations between men and women, schooling, freedom of expression and even the validity of violence in defence of religion. He notes – echoing an article on ‘Breitbart London’ just two weeks ago which reveals a growing disparity between older and younger Muslims in Britain – that

“the gaps between Muslim and non-Muslim youngsters are nearly as large as those between their elders”.

“And while he is cautious to note that many Muslims in Britain are grateful to be here, and do identify with role models such as Hussain and Farah, there is a widening gap in society with many Muslims segregating themselves.

“It’s not as though we couldn’t have seen this coming. But we’ve repeatedly failed to spot the warning signs,” he admits.

“Twenty years ago… I published the report titled “Islamophobia: A Challenge for Us All”, we thought that the real risk of the arrival of new communities was discrimination against Muslims. Our 1996 survey…showed that there was plenty of it around. But we got almost everything else wrong.”

“His comments will come as a blow to those who continue to attack elements in British society who are concerned about Muslim immigration and integration, and in fact may even go some way to shoring up comments made by U.S. Presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz seeking to slow down or pause the rate of Muslim immigration into the West.

“We estimated that the Muslim population of the UK would be approaching 2 [million] by 2020. We underestimated by nearly a million. We predicted that the most lethal threat to Muslims would come from racial attacks and social exclusion. We completely failed to foresee the urban conflicts of 2001 that ravaged our northern cities. And of course we didn’t dream of 9/11 and the atrocities in Madrid, Paris, Istanbul, Brussels and London.”

“For a long time, I too thought that Europe’s Muslims would become like previous waves of migrants, gradually abandoning their ancestral ways, wearing their religious and cultural baggage lightly, and gradually blending into Britain’s diverse identity landscape. I should have known better.”

“And Mr. Phillips even acknowledges that the mass sexual grooming and rape scandals that are plaguing heavily-Muslim-populated towns across Britain are because of Muslim – not ‘Asian’ – men. He writes:

“The contempt for white girls among some Muslim men has been highlighted by the recent scandals in Rotherham, Oxford, Rochdale and other towns. But this merely reflects a deeply ingrained sexism that runs through Britain’s Muslim communities

– in a nod to those who have long protested this to be the case in the face of political, media, and even police cover ups.

“Even Left wing columnist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown told him:

“[W]e [liberal Muslims] are a dying breed — in 10 years there will be very few of us left unless something really important is done.”

“Phillips comments:

“Some of my journalist friends imagine that, with time, the Muslims will grow out of it. They won’t.”

“And indeed, he lays the blame at the feet of the liberal, metropolitan elite, media classes:

“Oddly, the biggest obstacles we now face in addressing the growth of this nation-within-a-nation are not created by British Muslims themselves. Many of our (distinctly un-diverse) elite political and media classes simply refuse to acknowledge the truth. Any undesirable behaviours are attributed to poverty and alienation. Backing for violent extremism must be the fault of the Americans. Oppression of women is a cultural trait that will fade with time, nothing to do with the true face of Islam.”

“Even when confronted with the growing pile of evidence to the contrary, and the angst of the liberal minority of British Muslims, clever, important people still cling to the patronising certainty that British Muslims will, over time, come to see that “our” ways are better.”

“In terms of solutions, Mr. Phillips opines on “halting the growth of sharia courts and placing them under regulation”; ensuring that school governance never falls into the hands of a single-minority group; “ensuring mosques that receive a steady flow of funds from foreign governments such as Saudi Arabia, however disguised, are forced to reduce their dependency on Wahhabi patronage”; and an end to the “silence-for-votes understanding between local politicians and Muslim leaders — the sort of Pontius Pilate deal that had such catastrophic outcomes in Rotherham and Rochdale”.

“Mr. Phillips’s comments echo those of the Czech president, and research from across Europe that revealed attitudes amongst Muslims on the continent have hardened. The younger the Muslim, the more likely they are to hold hard-line views, one recent study found.”

“When I was growing up, I couldn’t figure out why anyone would want to live anywhere but London. Dr. Johnson’s quote was branded on fashion accessories, I recall:

“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.”

“Well, there’s an argument to be made about me being tired of modern life, certainly. But either way, Dr. Johnson’s quote simply doesn’t hold true anymore.

“Today, London elects its first, demonstrably Islamist-sympathetic Mayor.

“The Mayoralty of the city is a farce to begin with. The product of a major error of Margaret Thatcher’s, when she sought in the short term to deal with the socialists at the ‘Greater London Council’ (GLC). Alas, she was not perfect.

“And those same hard-Leftists have infiltrated London’s new institutions at every level. When Nazi-obsessive Ken Livingstone was in charge, he famously forced the ‘Greater London Authority’ (GLA) – the institutional bastard child of the GLC – to order 40 copies of the hard-Left {Communist} ‘Morning Star’ newspaper every day, probably doubling the paper’s readership overnight.

“He was a man who had battled against Mrs. Thatcher in the 1980s, and she foresaw his aspirations when she declared that he was keen

“To impose upon this nation a tyranny which the peoples of Eastern Europe yearn to cast aside”.

“And Sadiq Khan – crowned today the mayor of London’s exploding, almost 50% foreign-born population – is one of Mr. Livingstone’s old pals. He was known for stuffing the GLA with his cronies, but to help Mr. Khan in there eight years after leaving the office himself is some feat — not least because he helped to enrage London’s Jewish population in the last few days before the poll by calling Hitler a “Zionist”.

“But the voting is over, the ballots have been counted – including (probably) a whopping turnout of 400% in ‘Tower Hamlets’. London now has a Muslim mayor.

“Does it matter? I find it a difficult question to answer.

“It’s certainly not what is chasing me away from the capital.

“That would be, to name a few reasons: the vapid new residents, the ‘pop-up bars’, the horrendous new architecture which eclipses the finest parts of the city, the rising house prices, the pollution, the traffic, the social and cultural decay in general… I’ll stop now.

“But in being called a racist nearly all of one’s adult life, I have to self-examine sometimes. Am I a bigot, or a xenophobe? Would I care if Syed Kamall, or Sajid Javid, or Maajid Nawaz were London mayor?

“No, no I wouldn’t…

“It is not that Mr. Khan is a Muslim that upsets me. It is the kind of Muslim he is that upsets me. It is a kind of Muslim that is becoming normalised due to foreign influences and an inability for our Western leaders to face Islamisation and radicalisation head on.

“No, I won’t sit idly by and pay my taxes and frequent London’s pubs, and let Mr. Khan reap the rewards of people like me who bring money and jobs and some semblance of moral and philosophical grounding to this city. I won’t do it.

“London will be run (further) into the ground during his tenure. More mass migration, more expensive, stupid government projects combined with Labour’s ability to overspend at every turn (and lump me with the bill), and more PC-culture that tries to shut people like me up when I complain about it…

“Dr. Johnson’s quote from 1777 actually begins:

“Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London”.

“A lot of things have changed since then, and in 2016 I would argue that you should find no man, at all intellectual, who is not willing to leave London.

“N.B. Dr. Johnson also once remarked,

“I am willing to love all mankind, except an American”.

“Again, I disagree. I find myself effectively only willing to love freedom-defending Americans (you may culturally self-identify if that helps) any more. Mankind, sadly, is neither manly, nor kindly, anymore.”

Meet the new Mayor:

“…Mr. Khan’s own track record is perhaps one of the most sour of all Muslim politicians in the Western world.

“In 2001, he was the lawyer for the {overtly racist} ‘Nation of Islam’ in its successful High Court bid to overturn the 15-year-ban on its leader, Louis Farrakhan.

“In 2005 and 2006, he visited terror-charged Babar Ahmad in Woodhill Prison. Mr. Ahmed was extradited to the U.S. in 2012, serving time in prison before being returned to the UK in 2015. Mr. Ahmed pleaded guilty to the terrorist offences of conspiracy, and providing material support to the ‘Taliban’.

“And Mr. Khan also campaigned for the release and repatriation of Shaker Aamer, Britain’s last Guantanamo detainee, who was returned to the UK in November.

“Both Messrs. Aamer and Ahmed provided Mr. Khan with links to the advocacy group ‘CAGE’, which described the Islamic State executioner Mohammed Emwazi as a “beautiful young man”, and which has campaigned on behalf of both men. Mr. Khan is reported to have shared a stage with five Islamic extremists, including at sex-segregated events…

“The ‘ConservativeHome website’ lists even more concerns, including:

–A letter to the Guardian in the wake of the 7/7 terrorist bombings on London, blaming terrorism on British Government policy;

–His legal defence of Zacarias Moussaoui, a 9/11 terrorist who confessed to being a member of ‘Al Qaeda’;

–His chapter in a book, entitled ‘Actions Against the Police’ which advises on how to bring charges against the police for “racism”. This is the same police force that Mr. Khan as London mayor would exercise authority over;

–His defence of Islamist extremist Azzam Tamimi. When Dr. Tamimi told a crowd that the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammed would “cause the world to tremble” and predicted “Fire… throughout the world if they don’t stop”, Mr. Khan, who shared a platform with him, dismissed the threats as “flowery language”;

–His platform-sharing with Suliman Gani, a south London imam who has urged female subservience to men, and called for the founding of an Islamic state…

“…their mayor for the next four years is a man with the judgement, priorities, and fellow travellers as laid out above. This, combined with an annual £16bn budget, and an army of police, bureaucrats, and officials, would make Mr. Khan one of the most powerful Muslims in the Western world…
“This hollow fabric either must inclose,
Within its blind recess, our secret foes;
Or ‘t is an engine rais’d above the town,
T’ o’erlook the walls, and then to batter down.
Somewhat is sure design’d, by fraud or force:
Trust not their presents, nor admit the horse.”

‘The Netherlands to Abandon Multiculturalism’

A more obligatory integration is justified because the government also demands that from its own citizens. It is necessary because otherwise the society gradually grows apart and eventually no one feels at home anymore in the Netherlands. The integration will not be tailored to different groups.

“The Dutch government says it will abandon the long-standing model of multiculturalism that has encouraged Muslim immigrants to create a parallel society within the Netherlands. A new integration bill (covering letter and 15-page action plan), which Dutch Interior Minister Piet Hein Donner presented to parliament on June 16, reads:

“The government shares the social dissatisfaction over the multicultural society model and plans to shift priority to the values of the Dutch people. In the new integration system, the values of the Dutch society play a central role. With this change, the government steps away from the model of a multicultural society.”

“The letter continues:

“A more obligatory integration is justified because the government also demands that from its own citizens. It is necessary because otherwise the society gradually grows apart and eventually no one feels at home anymore in the Netherlands. The integration will not be tailored to different groups.”

The new integration policy will place more demands on immigrants. For example, immigrants will be required to learn the Dutch language, and the government will take a tougher approach to immigrants to ignore Dutch values or disobey Dutch law. The government will also stop offering special subsidies for Muslim immigrants because, according to Donner,

“it is not the government’s job to integrate immigrants.”

The government will introduce new legislation that outlaws forced marriages and will also impose tougher measures against Muslim immigrants who lower their chances of employment by the way they dress. More specifically, the government will impose a ban on face-covering Islamic burqas as of January 1, 2013.

“If necessary, the government will introduce extra measures to allow the removal of residence permits from immigrants who fail their integration course. The measures are being imposed by the new center-right government of Conservatives (VVD) and Christian Democrats (CDA), with parliamentary support from the anti-Islam ‘Freedom Party’ (PVV), whose leader, Geert Wilders, is currently on trial in Amsterdam for “inciting hatred” against Muslims.

“As expected, Muslim organizations in Holland have been quick to criticize the proposals. The Moroccan-Dutch organization ‘Samenwerkingsverband van Marokkaanse Nederlanders’, which advises the government ‘on’ {‘against’} integration matters, argues that Muslim immigrants need extra support to find a job. The umbrella Muslim group ‘Contactorgaan Moslims en Overheid’ says that although it agrees that immigrants should be better integrated into Dutch society, it is opposed to a ban on burqas.

“But polls show that a majority of Dutch voters support the government’s skepticism about multiculturalism. According to a Maurice de Hond poll published by the center-right newspaper ‘Trouw’ on June 19, 74% of Dutch voters say immigrants should conform to Dutch values. Moreover, 83% of those polled support a ban on burqas in public spaces.

“The proper integration of the more than one million Muslims now living in Holland has been a major political issue ever since 2002, when Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn was assassinated for his views on Muslim immigration, and since 2004, when Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh was stabbed to death for producing a movie that criticized Islam.

“Muslim immigration to the Netherlands can be traced back to the 1960s and 1970s, when a blue collar labor shortage prompted the Dutch government to conclude recruitment agreements with countries like Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey. In the 1980s and 1990s, Muslims also arrived in the Netherlands as asylum seekers and refugees, mainly from Afghanistan, Bosnia, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and Somalia.

“There are now an estimated 1.2 million Muslims in the Netherlands, which is equivalent to about 6% of the country’s overall population. Moroccans and Turks comprise nearly two-thirds of all Muslims in the Netherlands. Most Muslims live in the four major cities of the country: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht.

As their numbers grow, Muslim immigrants have become increasingly more assertive in carving out a role for Islam within Dutch society. For example, a documentary aired by the television program ‘Netwerk’ in June 2009 reported that Dutch law was being systematically undermined by the growth of Sharia justice in the Netherlands.

“In December 2004, the Dutch Ministry of the Interior published a 60-page report titled “From Dawa to Jihad”. Prepared by the Dutch intelligence agency AIVD, the report says that the Netherlands is home to up to 50,000 radical Muslims whose key ideological aim is to target the Western way of life and to confront Western political, economic, and cultural domination.

“The report concludes that Dutch society is poorly equipped to resist the threat of radical Islam because of “a culture of permissiveness” that has become synonymous with “closing one’s eyes” to multiple transgressions of the law.

“As for Interior Minister Donner, he has undergone a late-in-life conversion on the issue of Muslim immigration. In September 2006, while serving as justice minister, Donner provoked an outcry after saying that he welcomed the introduction of Islamic Sharia law in the Netherlands if the majority wants it. He also said Holland should give Muslims more freedoms to behave according to their traditions.
“After applauding Queen Beatrix for respecting Islam by not insisting that a Muslim leader shake hands with her during a visit to the Mobarak Mosque in The Hague, Donner said:

“A tone that I do not like has crept into the political debate on integration. A tone of: ‘Thou shalt assimilate. Thou shalt adopt our values in public. Be reasonable, do it our way.’ That is not my approach.”

“Fast forward to 2011 and Donner now says his government

“will distance itself from the relativism contained in the model of a multicultural society.”

“Although society changes, he says, it must not be “interchangeable with any other form of society.”
